Question:

What causes a succulent to become tall and have no leaves on the stem from the soil up? I’m trying to save one from my daughter’s wedding that is getting tall but not larger.

Answer:

I think one of the best things about succulents is that they tell you what they need. In this case, it sounds like your succulent needs more light.

When a succulent stretches, it is searching for more light. If your plant is indoors and on a windowsill, it’s possible it needs a grow light to prevent further stretching. There’s much less light in the fall, and the shorter days can have an affect on your light-loving plants.

It’s impossible for your succulent to “shrink” back to normal, however, you can still save it!

The easiest way to “fix” a stretched succulent is to behead it, planting the healthy top portion.
