Healthy succulents start with good soil

Well-draining soil is crucial for healthy succulents. Their roots won't thrive in dense, compact soil.  They need soil that dries out quickly and gives the roots plenty of air. It matters more than most people realize.

Sitting in wet soil too long makes succulents take up too much water. That leads to root rot, and eventually a dead plant.

Why it matters

For over 10 years I've used a gritty soil mix. It holds enough water for the roots, but never stays wet or soggy.

The gritty mix

One part pine bark fines, one part Turface, and one part crushed granite. That's the mix I've used for years.

The recipe

The critical part is particle size. Screen everything to about a quarter inch (6mm) so water can flow right through.

Particle size matters

Short on time? Grab a bag of cactus mix at the store, then mix in some pumice or crushed granite to help it drain.

The easy option

Get the soil right, and watering gets so much easier. Your succulents will thank you!
