Choosing the right pot for succulents

Picking a pot is easy to overlook, but it's a big part of keeping your succulents happy.  Over the years I've found a few things worth thinking about before you plant.

If you remember nothing else, get a pot with a drainage hole. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of watering.

Drainage first

Terra cotta and ceramic breathe well, so they work indoors and out. Just know they're heavy, and they can break.

Plastic is light and tough to break, but less breathable. With good soil and a drainage hole, that's not a problem.

Wood is fun and stays cool in hot sun. In low light it can hold water too long, and it breaks down over time.

Found a pot with no drainage? Drill a hole with a diamond tip bit, then cover it with mesh so the soil stays in.

No hole? No problem

The right pot makes watering easier and your succulents happier. Have fun finding one you love!
