5 hardy hens and chicks

Sempervivum, better known as hens and chicks, are the hardy rosettes that form tight clusters and send out little offsets, the chicks.  They're cold hardy and hold their bright color in extreme temperatures, which makes them perfect for outdoor gardens. Here are five I love.

A cold-hardy little rosette that's perfect in container gardens, mini gardens, or a green roof. It shrugs off temps down to -20F.

Hedgehog

Great in rock gardens or as groundcover, and tough down to -30F. It wants full to partial sun outdoors, and bonus, it's deer resistant.

Pink Lemonade

Those cobwebbed rosettes are the showpiece here. It loves full to partial sun and looks amazing in a rock wall or vertical garden.

Cebenese

One for outdoor growers. It's very cold hardy and happy in rock and container gardens with full to partial sun.

Royanum

This one keeps its bright color all winter, even under snow. It's hardy to -30F and happy in full or partial sun outdoors.
