Why do you clean off all the small roots from the plant before transplanting?

Preparing your succulent for planting is one way to ensure its success in growing. This is something I cover in great detail, step-by-step, in my premium course!

Nurseries generally plant succulents in the same soil as other plants; succulents need well-draining soil to thrive, and so it’s best to remove the original soil before planting.  This usually means removing some of the smaller roots.

Don’t be concerned that you’ll damage the roots as you do this! Succulent roots are very tough, and can even be torn completely off, and your plant will survive, growing new roots.

It’s not necessary to remove roots before replanting, but it’s usually easier to remove the old soil if you take of some of the smaller roots too.
